What space engineers in high-pressure environments taught me about focus

The most cognitively demanding operational environments in the world are not run by people who multitask. They're run by people who have mastered the discipline of single-system focus.

Each person is responsible for exactly one system. One console. One domain. For divided attention degrades performance, and in high-stakes environments, degraded performance has consequences.

They call it console discipline. You own your console. You don't interfere with anyone else's unless asked. You go deep, not wide.

As a founder, you've been told the opposite your whole career. Be across everything. Have context on everything. Stay in all the loops.

That advice is destroying your ability to think.


The one thing that changed how I work

I started treating my calendar the way elite operators treat a mission plan.

The mission plan isn't a list of everything that might happen. It's a sequence of defined phases, each with a clear objective and a clear endpoint.

Now, before I open a single app in the morning, I write one sentence: "Today's mission is _____."

Not three things. Not a list. One mission. Everything else is noise until that mission is closed.

My output doubled in six weeks. Not because I worked more hours — I worked fewer. But I worked with a level of clarity I hadn't had since the early days when it was just me and the problem.
